Water softeners have an organic resin that has been primed by sodium ions. When water passes through it, these ions are released to exchange for Calcium or Magnesium. After all of the sodium is exchanged, the salt solution contains the sodium and the resin is automatically refilled. This water can only be used to wash dishes or clean the toilet.
